About Translate PDF
Translate PDF turns a document into another language and gives it back as a PDF with the same pages in the same order. Pictures, drawings and colours stay where they were; the original text is taken out and each paragraph, heading, list item or table cell is replaced by its translation, set in a font that covers the new language and made a little smaller when it needs the room. If you only need the words, choose Markdown and get the translated text page by page. On a computer that can run AI, the translation is done on your device: by your browser's built-in translator, which desktop Chrome has for many language pairs, or by the Large model, which you download once from this site. On phones and older devices our server AI translates by default: the PDF is taken apart and rebuilt on your device, and only its text is sent. It needs real text, so run OCR PDF on scans first.
Why your files stay private
Online translators keep a copy of what you give them, which is a poor fit for letters, contracts and medical records. Here the PDF is taken apart and rebuilt in your browser, so the file never leaves your device. On a computer that can run AI, nothing is sent at all. On phones and older devices, server AI receives only its text, which isn't stored or used to train AI, and you can choose On this device instead. Nopload keeps no record of it.
Translate PDF: common questions
- Which languages can it translate?
- Any of the site's languages. Server AI and the Large model translate between all of them; quality is best for widely used ones. Your browser's built-in translator, where it has one, covers the pairs it lists for your device.
- Will the layout stay the same?
- The pages, pictures, drawings and their positions stay the same. Each block of text keeps its box, but translations are often longer, so text may be set smaller to fit. Check tables and narrow columns before you share the result.
- Can it translate without sending anything?
- Yes. On a computer that can run AI it always does: download the Large model once, or use your browser's built-in translator where it has your language pair. On phones and older devices, choose On this device under Where the AI runs; it then needs one of those two.
- Can it translate scanned documents?
- Not directly: a scan is pictures of pages, with no text to translate. Run OCR PDF first to add a text layer, then translate the searchable copy.
- Is a machine translation good enough for official use?
- It's good for understanding a document or a first draft. For contracts, certificates or anything you submit to an authority, have the result checked by a person who knows both languages, as you would with any machine translation.
