How to use Summarize PDF

About Summarize PDF

Summarize PDF reads a document and gives you its key points as a short Markdown summary you can read on the page, copy or save. It follows the document's headings and paragraphs and leaves out tables, figures, running headers and footers. By default the summary is written by a cloud AI, Claude by Anthropic: the PDF is read on your device and only its text is sent. If you'd rather nothing left your device, choose On this device. Then your browser's built-in AI writes the summary where it has one, as desktop Chrome can, or a model you download once; otherwise the summary is made of the document's own most important sentences, so every line can be traced back to the PDF.

Why your files stay private

Documents worth summarizing are often the ones you'd least like to hand over: contracts, reports, medical letters, coursework. Here the PDF itself never leaves your device. With the cloud AI, only its text goes to Anthropic to be summarised, and it isn't used to train AI. Choose On this device and nothing is sent at all. Nopload stores and logs nothing.

Summarize PDF: common questions

Does it use AI?
Yes. By default a cloud AI, Claude by Anthropic, writes the summary from the document's text; your file itself isn't uploaded. Under Where the AI runs you can choose On this device instead. Then only AI on your device is used or, without one, the summary is picked from the document's own sentences, and nothing is sent anywhere.
How long is each summary?
When an AI writes the summary, short, medium and long ask for about 3, 5 and 8 key points. When it's picked from the document instead, short keeps up to 3 sentences, medium up to 7 and long up to 15, the long one grouped under the document's own section headings. A short document gets fewer.
Can I get the summary in another language?
Yes. Choose the language under Summary language. The cloud AI writes in any of the site's languages. On this device it depends on your browser being able to translate; if it can't, the summary stays in the document's language and the page tells you so.
Why does it say there is no text?
The PDF is probably a scan: pictures of pages rather than text. Run OCR PDF first to add a text layer, then summarize the searchable copy.
Is there a page or size limit?
There's no page limit. With the cloud AI, very long documents are summarised from about their first 15,000 words plus their key sentences. On this device the whole document is read; a big file simply takes longer on a slower computer or phone.
