About PDF bookmarks

PDF bookmarks turns the headings of a long document into a clickable outline that readers show beside the pages, so a report, manual or thesis becomes easy to find your way around. Nopload reads each page, finds the lines set larger or bolder than the body text, and nests them by level: chapters, then sections, then subsections. Each bookmark jumps to its heading on the right page. You can also remove every bookmark, for example from a file put together from many parts.

Why your files stay private

A document long enough to need bookmarks is often a contract, a thesis or an internal manual. The headings are read and the outline written inside your browser, so the file stays on your device.

PDF bookmarks: common questions

How are headings recognised?
By their type: lines set clearly larger than the body text, or bold and slightly larger, count as headings. The bigger the type, the higher the level. Body text, lists and tables never become bookmarks.
What happens to bookmarks the file already had?
The new outline replaces them. If the existing bookmarks are good, there's no need to run this tool on the file.
My scanned PDF gets no bookmarks. Why?
A scan is a picture without text, so there are no headings to read. Run OCR PDF first to add a text layer, then make the bookmarks.
How many heading levels should I include?
Two levels suit most documents: chapters and their sections. Choose one for a short outline, or three for detailed manuals.
Can I change the bookmark titles?
Not here: the titles are the headings as they appear in the text. To change one, edit the heading in the source document and export the PDF again.
