About Add header and footer
Add header and footer writes a line of text at the top of each page, the bottom, or both: a document title, a company or course name, a confidentiality line, a date or the page numbers. Placeholders fill in for each page, so “{filename}, page {page} of {pages}” becomes “minutes, page 3 of 12”. You choose the alignment, font, size, colour and distance from the edge, which pages get the text and how many pages at the start to leave out, such as a cover. Text in any script is supported; fonts for non-Latin scripts are embedded so it shows correctly everywhere.
Why your files stay private
Headers often carry names, case numbers or “confidential” for a reason. The text is drawn onto the pages in your browser and the PDF is saved to your device; nothing is uploaded.
Add header and footer: common questions
- Which placeholders can I use?
- {page} is the page number, {pages} the number of pages in the document, {filename} the file name without “.pdf”, and {date} today’s date as year-month-day.
- Can I leave the cover page out?
- Yes. Set how many pages at the start to skip, or list the exact pages that should get the text, such as 2-10.
- Will the text cover the page’s content?
- It goes in the margin, at the distance from the edge you choose. Documents with very little margin may need the small setting or a smaller font size. Open the result and check a page or two before printing a long document.
- How is this different from Add page numbers?
- Add page numbers is made for numbering, with Roman numerals, Bates numbers and mirrored positions. Header and footer is for free text on both edges, with or without a number. You can use both on the same file: numbers at the bottom from one, a title at the top from the other.
- Can I add headers to several PDFs at once?
- Yes. Add several files and each gets the same header and footer, with its own file name and page count filled in.
