About PDF booklet

PDF booklet arranges a document for saddle-stitch printing, the way programmes, zines, order-of-service sheets and small manuals are made. Pages are put two to a side on landscape sheets in the order that a double-sided printout needs, so when you fold the stack in half and staple the spine, page 1 is the front cover and the rest follow in sequence. An eight-page document becomes two sheets: the first carries pages 8 and 1 on one side and 2 and 7 on the other. Blank pages are added at the end when the page count isn’t a multiple of four.

Why your files stay private

Booklets are often for events, parishes, schools and small clubs, with names and details inside. The pages are rearranged by code in your browser and nothing is uploaded, so the document stays on your device.

PDF booklet: common questions

How should I print the booklet?
Print on both sides of the paper and choose “flip on short edge” (sometimes called short-edge binding). If your printer prints one side only, print the odd sheets, put the stack back in and print the even ones.
Why are there blank pages at the end?
Every folded sheet holds four pages, so a booklet always has a multiple of four. A ten-page document gets two blank pages at the back, which usually land on the inside back cover.
What does binding on the right do?
It mirrors each spread, so the booklet opens from the other side. Use it for Arabic, Hebrew, Persian or Urdu, and for Japanese and Chinese books set in vertical text.
How many pages can one booklet have?
Any number, but a folded stack of more than about 15 sheets (60 pages) gets thick at the spine and the inner pages stick out. For long documents, make several booklets and bind them as sections.
What size will the finished booklet be?
Half the sheet. Printed on A4 it folds to A5, and on US Letter to 5.5 × 8.5 inches. With the pages’ own size, each sheet is two pages wide, as a print shop would use.
