About N-up PDF

N-up PDF places several pages of a PDF side by side on each sheet, so a 40-page slide deck prints on 10 sheets at four to a side, or on 20 sheets at two. It is the layout people use for handouts, proofreading copies, revision notes and drafts that only need to be readable, not full size. The pages are scaled to fit their cell and keep their text and drawings as vectors, so small print stays crisp. Pages turned sideways in the original are shown the right way up, and you can add a thin frame around each one.

Why your files stay private

Handouts and drafts are often unfinished work you would rather not hand to a website. The pages are laid out by code running in your browser and the result is saved to your device; the PDF is never uploaded.

N-up PDF: common questions

In what order are the pages placed?
Left to right, then top to bottom, the way you read a page of text: with four per sheet, page 1 is top left, page 2 top right, page 3 bottom left and page 4 bottom right.
Which way round is the sheet?
With two per sheet, portrait pages go side by side on a landscape sheet and landscape pages one above the other on a portrait sheet. With four or nine, the sheet takes the same shape as the pages, so each one is as large as possible.
Will the text be too small to read?
Two per sheet prints at about 70% of the original size and four at about half, which suits most documents. Nine per sheet works for slides and thumbnails rather than dense text.
Can my printer do this instead?
Many print dialogs offer “pages per sheet”, but not every printer driver or phone does, and the setting is easy to forget. A PDF that is already laid out prints the same everywhere and can be shared with others.
Are links and form fields kept?
No. The pages are drawn onto new sheets for printing, so the result keeps what is visible and drops links, comments and fillable fields. Keep the original for reading on screen.
